The South Wind

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 99989

Several days ago, Josh Burbank had vanished without a trace in the wake of his now infamous phone call where he insulted Australia. His parents and siblings were on the phone nearly nonstop contacting any and all people that Josh had come into contact with.

Scott Childers and Jasper Hewitt were also conducting their own frantic search for Josh, while the girls (Krissy Cobham, Scott's girlfriend; Sara Hewitt, and Jasper's girlfriend Anne Peters) did their best to console a nearly hysterical Beth McCart, Josh's longtime significant other. Beth was used to Josh's weird impulses and the occasional disappearance for a couple of days, but he had never fallen this completely off the map before.

Scott and Jasper were coming up with nothing, and they were starting to fear the worst: somehow, Josh had been erased from existence and this time, there was no hope of getting him back alive. They both agreed that it was time to call in Help, their short mystical friend who seemed capable of doing almost everything.

Thousands of miles away, Josh Burbank stood in the center of the Plaza Islas Malvinas, just a couple of blocks west from the central business district in Ushuaia, Argentina. Ushuaia is arguably the southernmost city in the world at the southern tip of South America. Only a few small fishing villages lie further south across the Beagle Channel on Chile's Isla Navarino. Antarctica and its frozen landscape were due even further south, less than a thousand miles by Josh's estimation.

Josh hated to leave his friends, his family, and his beloved girlfriend the way he did. And maybe someday, after he had returned back home, he would tell them the story of why he ran out on them and fled to this remote Argentine municipality. Hell, Josh thought, by that time, maybe it would even make sense to me why I left. But for the time being, Josh wasn't talking about what motivated him to come down here. It wasn't like this was the first time Josh had caused an international incident before...

Josh had prepared well for this trip. He did not bring any of his own credit cards, and had opened four new accounts under an assumed name, which we will learn further into this story arc. Nor did he even bring his own cell phone, relying on a cheap pre-paid model he bought at a dollar store the night before his flight to Argentina departed. He was also armed with thousands of Argentine pesos, which might not get Josh as far as he would hope in comparison with the American dollar. He had also brought three suitcases on the trip, and they're all sitting at his feet in the center of the park.

Aside from the airport to Josh's south, there was only one way to get out of town if he needed to: via National Route 3. The highway went southwest only for a few miles before reaching its terminus at a nearby national park. In the opposite direction, NR 3 was the primary roadway connecting Ushuaia with the rest of Argentina. Due northeast was the region's other large city, Rio Grande, on the Atlantic coast. Josh took comfort in knowing that there was a way out if he needed one.

But for now, Josh wasn't looking to escape. In fact, he really wasn't all that sure what his next step down here would even be...

  1. Josh picks up his bags and begins walking.
  2. Josh starts looking for some kind of lodging. It had been a long journey, and he wanted rest desperately.
  3. Suddenly, a car pulls up and parks. Two people step out. Somehow, they know Josh and why he's here. Who are these strangers?
