To Fred's shock, the man did not flinch, or pull back, or try to remove his sucking teeth. He simply looked at him with eyes that were patient and calm and said: "Drink and feed yourself, in the name of the One, for by God, you have earned your thirst." Happy to oblige, Fred slakes his appetite to its full, and he feels not only infused with all the fresh energy a good meal provides, but also he is different somehow. Something momentous has occurred, as if he was suddenly lifted high into the air and shot through, talon to wingtip, with bright unearthly light. At the same time, he can feel the old man's energy waning fast. Fred tells himself as he looks into his kindly eyes that he has given permission to steal his life.
