Fred is in the form of a bat...a vampire bat to be exact...and he is near death with the fatigue of starvation. His transformation into bat form which made his escape possible broguht enough of a need to feed, and his exertions since have brought him near the brink. But in the wilderness, where there is the fire of a pitched camp there is blood, and the inclinations native to his form spur him on with enthusiasm, for human blood is the best there is.
