You wipe the sweat from your brow. Digging up Sir Fred's grave had
been hard
work, especially since you only had his tombstone to use as a shovel. But
you found his
coffin empty and this has led you to believe that ALL of the graves are
empty. And that
would mean that these mighty knights of the Great Kingdom are still alive.
You think of
the glory that would be yours if you found the knights, saving them from
whatever peril
has taken them. You would bask in the adoration of the people, the
gratitude of
four wealthy and powerful noble families, and of course the honor of
King Emry's
generous largesse. You might even be invited into the King's household and
thus enjoy the
company of the beautiful Princess Exotica.
But first you have to dig. Once again picking up the tombstone, you begin to push and shove and scrape away the dirt that you're sure covers nothing but an empty hole. It takes you longer this time, your limbs aching from the labor and your sweating body shivering in the cool air of the cave. You stop and take a breather; the cave is empty and quiet. You have seen and heard nothing since you arrived here. Whatever monsters might lurk about surely hid further on. You decide to remove your armor; it would make it much easier to finish your task. You then resume your digging until the heavy stone hits upon something that isn't hardpacked earth. But it isn't a wooden coffin either. It is soft and yielding. You kneel down in the hole you have dug and use your hands to move away the black earth until you finally uncover what lies underneath. It is a hand, pale and moist. On one finger is a blue sapphire ring. Etched upon the gem is the family crest of Sir Josh the knight. 'My god!' you think, 'they've buried him alive!'. Unfortunately for you, that isn't exactly correct. The pallid hand jerks upward and grabs your collar. Josh's upper body heaves forward, the foul earth cascading off his face and shoulders. You stare at him, completely caught off guard. The knight's face is strangely twisted, its features pocked and torn. His teeth are sharp and broken. The pallor of his face marks him as one no longer living or atleast no longer a member of the human race. With a growling moan Josh sinks his teeth into your forearm and rips out a chunk of meaty flesh. You scream and try to pull away, but his grip on you won't break. With your unharmed right arm you reach up and try to feel for your sword, but it lies too far away to be of any help. The ghoulish Josh, his face smeared with blood and gore, swallows the muscles of your arm and then lunges for more. As your mangled left arm lies limp and helpless, you reach out with your right and grab his neck, desperately trying to hold him off. But with the hold he has on your tunic, he mercilessly begins to pull you forward, closer to his gaping mouth. And with his other hand he spastically strikes at you, gouging furrows into your trembling flesh. Tired from the arduous task of digging up the two graves, your strength sapped by the battle with the unholy ghoul, it is only a matter of time until Josh deals you a fatal blow and all your struggles cease. 'Well this sucks...' you think as the life departs from your body and you become nothing more than a human happy meal.
