They had reached the road, and travelled some way along it. Anna was
grateful that
Sir James had stayed with her longer than he had said he would, especially
considering that
when the last of the light faded they had had to stop for the night. Now
it must be
nearly noon the next day, and he was still with her.
The road was easier going now, and at any moment she expected Sir James to say that he must turn back and return to his quest. Whether that would have happened remained unknown, for suddenly a group of half a dozen men, wearing knightly armour and carrying swords, sprang out from behind rocks beside the road and surrounded them. The armour they wore was very unusual, though, in being black, with strange devices inlaid on it in red. Both Anna and Sir James wore armour (chain mail in Anna's case) and carried swords, but they knew they had little chance in a fight with six such adversaries as these. So when the men's leader demanded that they lay down their swords, they reluctantly did so.
