In Which Things Get Quite Complicated

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 9909

"Yes, you're probably right," said Fred. "Whoever caused the coin to disappear could potentially be quite dangeous. But how do we find him?"

Astra pondered. "I don't know," she said. Before she could ponder much more, however, they heard footsteps approaching. Astra, Fred, Velus, and Zara rushed to find behind the nearest furniture, but they were too late. The man who had been making the footsteps entered...

Actually, he wasn't a man. He was just a teenage boy, short, blond and wiry, slightly older than Velus, and wearing the robes of an apprentice wizard. Fred recognized him instantly. "Jarlath?" said Fred, startled. "What are you doing here?"

"How do you know him?" asked Velus.

"He's my brother," said Fred. Velus seemed quite startled at this. "You're his brother?!"

"How do you know Jarlath?" asked Fred.

"Oh, hi Velus," said Jarlath. "I see you don't need to be cured." He saw Fred. "Fred? What the hell are you doing here?"

"I'm on a quest to destroy the Dragon," said Fred. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm here to cure Velus," explained Jarlath. "After all, I was the one who turned him into a dog in the first place. Entirely by accident, I assure you."

"What?!" said Fred, a little confused. "But I thought you said the Dragon turned you into a dog, not Jarlath?"

"Well," explained Velus, "I didn't tell you the truth because it was too embarrasing. It would sound much better to be turned into a dog by the Dragon than to be turned into one by a miscast spell of a teenage wizard."

"What was he intending to cast?" asked Fred.

"He wanted to increase my strength because Alexis's old boyfriend challenged me to a fight. Jarlath and I go way back. We've known each other for a long time, although I wouldn't say we're friends. He accuses me of stealing every girl who was ever interested in him."

"Who's Alexis?" asked Zara.

"Uh, nobody," said Velus.

Fred looked around and noticed that Jarlath was staring, open-mouthed, at Astra. "Could you please stop staring at Astra?" said Fred. "It's kind of rude."

"I wasn't staring at her body," said Jarlath. "I was staring at, uh, those glyphs. They're very interesting. Lycaean, aren't they?"

"Don't lie," said Astra. "I don't have any problem with your staring at my body. Men in the Great Kingdom aren't used to seeing naked women. And adolescent males are the same everywhere. But you're right, they are Lycaean." And she explained their predicament. "I have an idea, however," continued Astra. "Would it be possible for you to create another scroll of this type?"

Jarlath answered...

  1. "No, I'm afraid not."
  2. "Yes, but I'll need some very special ingredients."
