There was indeed a factor which Joan wasn't aware of, which explained why
Astra hadn't simply had Fred
transformed into a different man rather than into a girl. The
genuine prophecy had not only said that Astra would fall in love with Fred
but
also that Astra's beloved would be stronger, quicker and more agile than
she. Astra had thought
that tricking Belboz to have Fred turned into a girl would mean that that
part of the prophecy could
not come true, and hence that the whole prophecy would be inoperative. It
had never occurred to her that
Belboz might on his own initiative decide to make Joan stronger and more
agile
than
any woman had ever been. [9441-1]
There was another, but less important, factor. It seemed to Astra that whilst Fred might retain his essential "Fredness" as far as the prophecy was concerned even if his body was changed into another male one, it was far less likely that this would be so if he was transformed into a female. After all, that would be a far more radical change.
