A wanning gibbous moon cast its ethereal light upon the deathly quiet forest. Quiet save for the occasional hooting of an owl, which sent shivers down Fred’s spine. “Do you hear that?” queried Belboz, his eyes gleaming yellow almost of their own accord. “Indeed,” Fred replied in a wary whisper. “This…forest. It is unsettling…the silence…” His words trailed off as he cast worried glances about.“The owl is my familiar,” came Belboz’s smug retort. “This forest is the cursed forest of Nelon, although you may have already surmised as much, mind reader. A haven for all manner of dark things. Someone or something is following us.” Of course, mused Fred. The forest lay in the shadow of the rugged Shrekken Mountains, and was infamous indeed. Only criminals and monsters dwelt within its shadowy depths.“I have no weapon,” noted Fred. Belboz smiled at him. “Your mind is your weapon.”Suddenly, an arrow struck a tree mere inches from Fred’s head. The knight dove for the leafy forest floor while Belboz began chanting strange words. Out of the shadows leapt a handful of men in rudimentary armor. Several wielded swords, several wielded bows. “SURRENDER OR DIE!” came the hoarse cry of the largest bandit, a man who looked to be half-troll by the size of him. His eyes were green and two long tusks emerged from his lower mouth like that of a boar’s. He was armed with an impressive broadsword.
