Fred realised that his luck wasn't likely to last indefinitely. He had hoped that Belboz would be sufficiently impressed and alarmed to give up on the idea of selling him into slavery, and instead would let him go. But that hadn't happened. If and when Belboz did discover that Fred had tricked him, how would he react? Fred was afraid that he might be angry enough to kill him, even though it would mean that he wouldn't make any money from him. And he knew from Zenobia's fate how easily Belboz could do that.
Fred knew that sooner or later Belboz would need to sleep. When he did, Fred would try either to kill him or to escape. He couldn't make up his mind between the two, but there was no need to decide in advance.
