Fred awakens slowly, very slowly. He is surrounded by utter darkness. He takes a moment to remember what brought him here, and everything comes rushing back to him. He and Diana were falling, trying to escape the witch, and then... Nothing. Where is he? Where is Diana? Why can he not see anything? He makes a sudden and terrifying realization: He has not opened his eyes, nor can he feel them. Nor can he feel anything else. What has happened to him? After a few minutes, to his immense relief, he begins to see the colour gold, and everything else begins to come into clarity after that. He still lies among the treasure, which relieves him at first. But he still feels no physical sensation, and he cannot see Diana. When he tries to call for help, he cannot even open his mouth. Suddenly, Diana appears in front of him. He tries to call for her in joy, but despite his best efforts he still cannot. But when the woman opens her mouth, he quickly realizes that it is not Diana: it is the witch Zenobia. She smiles a terrible smile, looking straight at him, and says, "I want you to enjoy this, knight—enjoy seeing me and hearing my voice, for it is the last of anything like it that you will experience for a very long time. Even I know not how long." It dawns on Fred what has happened, and in growing horror he looks around (as best he can without a neck), verifying it... Yes, the coins next to him are his size, he cannot move, cannot feel or speak, and nobody would ever find him this way even if they knew exactly what to look for... He has been turned into a gold coin. The witch says, "Since I am such a kind and generous soul, I will allow you some 'final words.' Speak them now; choose carefully." She snaps her fingers.
