Stacy didn't know what she had expected the cryptographer to be like, but
she
certainly hadn't expected a girl who looked as if she might be young enough
to still be in high school. She had shoulder-length dark hair and a
serious expression.
Stacy thought she might be quite pretty if she ever smiled.
"You must be Stacy," the girl said, without bothering to say hello to the man. "Have you got the disk?" "Yes, more by luck than judgement," the man butted in. "But there's bad news. They know about both of our 'safe houses' and, worse still, Paul is dead." To Stacy's surprise, the girl's expression didn't change at all. She calmly said: "That's bad. I'm very sorry. Well, you'd better both come in." And she gestured towards the warehouse. "Can I drive the car in, Helen?" the man asked. "It belonged to one of 'them' whom I had to shoot, so it might not be wise to leave it out on the street." The girl said that would be fine, and the man drove it into the warehouse through what must once have been the goods entrance. Most of the warehouse consisted of a single large area which must once have been storage space, though it was now empty of everything except a layer of dust. But some of the warehouse was partitioned off into offices. After the man had parked the car in the middle of the open area, Helen led them into one of the offices.
