Exotica knew where she was, having visited this region on a state visit with her father a couple of years ago. She was worried by the sight of the ship down on the river. It was flying the Hespan flag, so there could be no doubt as to its nationality, and its design was clearly that of a sentry ship. Had Hespan and Genua set aside their old enmity and signed a treaty, without the news as yet having reached Allaria? Such an alliance could have worrying implications for her own country, as Hespan and Allaria had never got on. The two countries were not actually at war at the moment, but they had been not that many years ago, and it would be no surprise were hostilities to break out again in the near future.
Exotica realised that she needed to return home as fast as she could, and inform her father and his counsellors of what she had seen. It could be vital intelligence. The trouble was that she was deep in a foreign country some five hundred miles from home, without any money or ID, and wearing only a nightdress and slippers.
