Pre-Nuptial Disagreement

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 973

Fred stood by the tree in silence, quiet thoughts running through his mind. His life had taken a strange turn, and suddenly had some very real and serious complications. Things had happened that he could not ignore. He had to make a decision. He had to follow through on the only decision he was capable of making. Alicia waited for him patiently nearby, her hand absently stroking the fur of her tail. Finally, with an unconscious twitch of his snout, Fred set his jaw determinedly and stepped up to her.

"We must marry as soon as possible," he said with serious consideration.

"Excuse me?" Alicia yelped in shock. This, she hadn't expected.

"What we have done together must be sanctified within the sight of God," he said and took her by the shoulders. "Have no fear Alicia, I shall not abandon you. I am a son of the Duke of Suffex, I am a D'Honaire. I follow honor where honor leads."

Alicia cracked a smile, her eyes full of disbelief. "You're saying this because I might be pregnant, right? I mean, I know some guys have a thing about that. And it's cute and everything, but I think I can manage without you pulling out the old ball and chain."

Fred stared back at her, his brow furrowed. He did not understand her reaction. He was a D'Honaire. They were tied together now whether they liked it or not. Whether she was with child or not.

"You ARE serious!" she said and shook her head. "Look, YOU are a Duke's son and for all you know I could be a serving wench or a field serf. Now that wouldn't do for a D'Honaire, would it?"

"I am a man and live by a man's rules," Fred replied without boast.

"You really want to do it, don't you? You actually, really MEAN it..." Alicia still couldn't bring herself to believe Fred was for real. After all, they had only had sex. Why did he want to get married? He didn't even know her.

"I live by my honor, or I don't live at all," Fred answered her, a note of offense creeping into his voice.

"OoooKayyyyy (touchy guy, isn't he, she thought)...So you want to get married...Right?" She just wanted to make sure she was getting this straight.

"Ofcourse!" Fred said, losing his patience. Was she testing him, Fred wondered. Or was she from a land of savages and barbarians that did not know right from wrong?

Alicia ignored his rising indignation and just looked at him, an appraising gleam in her eye. And then she simply shrugged and smiled. And Fred smiled back. So Alicia nodded and grinned even wider. And then Fred began to nod too. 'What's he waiting for?' Alicia wondered. 'Why doesn't she say something?' Fred wondered. And the awkward moment just kept getting longer.

Unable to wait any longer, Alicia almost shouted, "So aren't you going to ask me?!"

Fred blinked. "Ask you what?"

"Who I was before I became such a foxy lady?" Alicia said as if it was the most obvious question in the world and exactly what Fred was dying to know.

"Why?," Fred asked. Now it was Alicia's turn to blink. "It doesn't matter who you were," he added, wondering why she felt it was important.

"Well..." Alicia began, and then smiled again. 'This guy is something else', she thought to herself with a wry chuckle, 'and he might just be a lot of fun, too'. "Why don't you let me think about it lover boy," she said with mock seriousness. "I mean, you are kinda cute." Her eyes twinkling, she finished by saying, "But for right now, why don't we just head into town..."

  1. And without waiting for his reply, Alicia scampered off into the woods.
