The alien looked grave. "If they have killed that ship's crew... Then they are in direct contravention of Article 93 of the Grand Treaty."

"And what does that mean?" asked Stacy, growing increasingly frustrated.

"It consitutes an act of war," replied the alien. "I must go and contact my superiors." The alien vanished, leaving Stacy alone to fret for several long minutes. At last it returned and said:

1. "We are now officially at war. My government is sending a fleet."
2. "In order to prevent a war, my government has officially declared that this incident did not happen."
3. "We have been authorized to use our secret weapon. I believe we may be able to get your brother back, after all."
