Vix and Janet managed to find a small cottage to rent where the landlord -
sympathetic because Janet was pregnant and he knew that she had had to
flee from her abusive former lover - didn't require them to pay any rent
in advance and even lent them a small sum so that they could buy food.
(Neither of them had any money, or indeed any possessions beyond the
clothes they were wearing.)
The seamstress's guild turned out to be willing to give Janet membership, which guaranteed her plenty of sewing work. Even better, she could do this at home, as the guild operated a collection and delivery service. This would be very handy as she neared the end of her pregnancy and became less mobile, as well as afterwards when she would have a baby to look after. Vix quickly secured a job at a local tavern as a barmaid who could also act as a bouncer whenever any drinkers became rowdy. One minor problem was that before long rumours started to spread that the two women had a lesbian relationship. Since they were living under the same roof, the rumours were probably inevitable, given the way people's minds work.
