"What if the water returns while we're underground? We could get trapped."

"The water is only draining back very slowly, and a lot of it probably won't find its way back into the lake at all. So I don't think that the risk is very great. Of course we could discover when we get there that the passage is still flooded and have to give up."

So they descended to the bed of the lake, and made their way towards the passage entrance.

1. They reach it.
2. They soon find themselves trying to wade through waist-deep mud.
3. They wade through deepening mud, and suddenly realise that they are trapped and are sinking in further and further.
