Fred and Astra had already had experience of the almost hypnotic quality of the Monkey's voice. No doubt that was how he had come to power in this land. If he told you to do something, then unless you were remarkably strong-minded it was almost impossible not to obey.

So when he said "You will put any thoughts of attacking me out of your minds", they did as he commanded. He went on: "I have talked to some of those from the caravan with which you travelled here. I understand that you told them that you are Princess Astra of Aqualaria and Lord Frederigo De Honaire from Allaria. Is that correct?"

"Yes," Astra said.

"Good. It is most fortuitous that you came here, as I can make good use of you.

  1. "I want you to take a message to your respective countries for me."
  2. "I am planning to invade and conquer your countries, and the intelligence that you can give me will be invakluable."
  3. "I want you to set up branches of the Church of the Immortal Monkey in your two countries. Astra shall be the High Priestess in Aqualaria and Fred the High Priest in Allaria."
  4. "Since you are clearly far more able than any of my current staff, you shall become my new chief courtiers."
  5. "The fighting prowess and bravery that you have displayed makes you well suited to a dangerous mission that I need carried out."
