Now They Are Five

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 90799

Though some way from full, the desert moon was bright enough for them to see the approaching figure some way off. But it was not until it had almost reached the oasis that they were able to see that it was yet another Astra. "This is getting silly," Astra 1 said.

"Our encountering one Astra from another reality could have been no more than a remarkable fluke," Exotica said, "but now that it's happened again it must surely be more than mere chance. But why it's happened or if there is somebody behind it, I couldn't hope to guess."

By now the newcomer was close enough for them to see that she was wearing an improvised bikini and carrying a sword. "Hello!" she called. "Can you tell me what on Earth is going on?"

Fred shrugged. "We haven't the foggiest."

Introductions were made and stories were exchanged. The newcomer, who it was agreed should be called Astra 3, drank her fill, but unfortunately there was no food to be had beyond a few dates from the palm trees.

Degrees of sunburn were compared. The redheaded Astras were more susceptible than the dark-haired Fred and Exotica. Astra 2 had been badly sunburnt during her earlier sojourn in the desert. Vincent had treated that for her, and the legacy was a tan that gave her a good degree of protection now. However the skins of Astras 1 and 3 were already starting to redden.

"We should push on," Fred said before long. "It will be much more pleasant travelling at night."

"And the temperature is dropping rapidly, as often happens at night in deserts," Exotica said. "The exercise should help to keep us from getting too cold."

  1. They set off once more.
  2. Just then, the keen-eyed Astra 1 said: "I think someone else is approaching!" "This is getting ridiculous," Fred grumped.
