"Could you explain some more about the Eye of Harmony?" Astra asked, as
they all
walked through the TARDIS's corridors. "Certainly," the Doctor said. "The
Eye of Harmony
is the rather poetic name for a massive black hole located within
Gallifrey. It's the main power source
for the entire planet. Travelling through
time and space requires vast amounts of energy. To provide this energy,
each TARDIS is powered
by the Eye of Harmony via an interdimensional link. Access to the Eye
gives each
TARDIS access to nearly inexhaustible energy reserves."
Astra rather wished she hadn't asked. What was a black hole, for one thing? However, some of the others, with a better grounding in physics than the warrior princess from a medieval culture possessed, found the explanation useful. One question occurs to her, though. "You say this Eye of Harnony is within Gallifrey? That's the planet you come from, right? In that case, how can we be going to take a look at it?" "Well, rather loosely, the TARDIS's end of the interdimensional link is also referred to as the Eye of Harmony. That's appropriate enough, as it looks rather like a giant eye." With that, they entered the central chamber where the Eye was located, and the Doctor pulled the lever that would uncover it.
