Whether the Dragon's answer to Astra's question was the full
answer was another matter, she thought, but this is what he said: "The
ruins are protected by an impenetrable magical force field that, as far
as I know, has prevented anyone entering since the civilisation of the
Elder Ones fell, hundreds of tears ago. That is until Jarlath, of course,
who managed it by some means unknown to me. The force field is about two
miles in diameter. When I first investigated, some years ago, I hoped
that it might be possible to fly in over the top of the field, but I soon
discovered that it formed a hemispherical dome, one mile high at the
centre. But I found that it has a slight flaw. At the highest point,
there is a circular gap in the field just a few feet across, as if a non-
corporeal pole penetrated up through the dome at that point.
Unfortunately the hole is much too small for me to pass through in my
dragon form. And climbing the side of the dome would be like trying to
climb a dome made of smooth ice."
"So why not position yourself above the hole, shapeshift to human, fall through the hole and then transform back into a dragon?" Fred asked. "Much too dangerous," the Dragon said. "Casting almost any spell takes a lot of concentration and I have never dared attempt one whilst airborne. However whilst the hole is too small for me, it is quite large anough for the two of you." "You intend to drop us through the hole?" Astra said. "But we'll be killed!" "Not at all.
