Fred did not know how long he had been wandering in the caves. Some parts of the caves, he'd
heard, were full of abandoned chambers and traps and monsters, but the part he was walking
through was nothing more than a twisting maze of dark, damp cave passages, with no way to tell
his location or progress. Most of his provisions had been burned in the battle with the Dragon,
leaving him with only a few torches and almost no food. He had not fed since entering the caves
and the weight of his armor and his quest were heavier than ever before.
Many times he turned back and tried to find his way out only to find himself at a dead end, then turned back again and made his way through more and more of the winding tunnels only to find another. His map would be useless even if he had anything to tell his location by and his torch was flickering out. And so he moved further and further into the maze, feeling as if he were drawn deeper and deeper under the earth with every step. It was not long before he finally found the weight too much to bear and fell to the ground as if dead. He could not raise himself from sleep even though he knew there was a good chance he would never wake up. But after a long and fitful sleep full of uneasy dreams he did wake up. He opened his eyes slowly and found himself surrounded by bright light. It was a few seconds before he knew what this meant: he was not in the tunnel where he had fallen.
