The Leather Shield

Astra used the knife to enlarge the hole some more, so that she could lift the shield out of the chest. She then turned it over to examine the underside, and they saw that the leather completely covered the material that formed the interior and provided the item with the necessary degree of rigidity. Gloria thought that this material was likely to be wood of some kind, as she could see little point in covering a metal shield with leather. Whether that wood would have petrified or would have been protected by the leather, there was no way of telling short of cutting apart the covering.

Laying the shield down, Astra looked inside the chest once more to see what had been underneath it.

1. Unfortunately it was an anticlimax. If there had ever been anything else in the chest it must have rotted away.
2. She found some pieces of leather armour, also in quite good condition.
3. She found something very different from the weapons or armour that the discovery of the shield had led her to expect.
