The petrified wood chest was strong, but not invulnerable. The chest
crashed to the ground, and a flat boom echoed against the walls of this
sunken room. Balischo shone the light on the chest, and that light
exposed snaky cracks, like those of a breaking coconut. Carduman raised
a short knife and plunged it into one of the cracks. Astra then took the
knife handle and twisted it with an effort. A large piece of rock peeled
off the top of the chest. Carduman and Gloria each grabbed an end and
placed it on the ground. Balischo lowered the light to the hole in the
stone chest as Astra, Gloria, and Carduman peered in.

Whatever was inside had decayed before the chest itself had petrified.

On top was a hammer with a rusty head and a petrified handle. Beneath was a mass of fused, rusty nails.

Inside the chest were pieces of precious metal.

On top of the chest was a shield. The shield was a long, leather-covered shield that Astra and Gloria would consider "old fashioned." It was in remarkably good shape.

The chest was filled with shoes. The ones on top were in bad shape, but the ones further down were well-preserved. Gloria and Astra paw through them with a strange interest (especially strange for Astra), as Balischo and Carduman wait patiently.
