"That looks nice," said Melissa. "Well, you'd expect a sufficiently
advanced civilisation
to be able to be able to restore the majority of the surface of their
planet to its pre-industrial
state," said Betty-1. "They might even have been able to shift their heavy
industry off-planet
altogether, maybe into space stations." "What about the sheer weight of
population?"
asked Stacy. "Wouldn't much of the planet have to be reserved for housing?
I remember
reading Asimov's 'Caves of Steel' - it's funny how I can recall things
like books I've
read, without being able to remember my own life. Anyway, in that book
Asimov postulated
that almost the entire surface of the Earth would one day be covered by
enormous cities."
"An advanced civilisation would probably have been practising birth
control for many
generations," said Betty-2. "Or many of their people might have moved off
into space.
Or it could be that this particular planet has been set aside for R and R,
as it were."
Then they heard the noise that indicated that the TARDIS was rematerialising, and they dashed into the control room so that they could see where they had landed.
