As Stacy and Julie were telling their story for the second or third time, a
middle-aged detective wearing a rather shabby raincoat came in. He sat
quietly
in a chair in the corner of the room until they were finished, then asked
the officer
in charge whether he would mind him taking over their case. "Be my guest,"
was the reply.
"They're just a couple of fruitcakes, who ought to be charged with wasting
police time
rather than anything else. But I'll leave that up to you."
The detective took them to another, smaller, interview room, where he introduced himself to them as Lieutenant Falk and told them that he believed their story. "Why?" asked Stacy, who felt that in his position she wouldn't have believed it.
