As the boat approached the Bloated Seal, Fogeno saw a figure leap
overboard. (The other escapee was screened from his view by the hull of
the ship.) But he had no time to worry about that at present; the person
who
had escaped would have no choice but to swim to the island, from where he
could be retrieved later if Fogeno thought that it was worth it.
Meanwhile he could see sailors and hotties running round the deck. There
was shouting and swearing and singing and cheering and - from the
hotties - piercing screams. What the Hell was going on? Was it a mutiny?
Whatever it was, it was clearly gross indiscipline - which was 144 times
as bad as ordinary indiscipline.
No-one on board the ship had noticed Fred and Alexis jump overboard. Nor had they noticed the approach of the boat, though it was by now only thirty yards away. Their attention was elsewhere. So they had a surprise when they heard Fogeno's voice bellow: "Avast, ye scurvy dogs! Secure those wenches, if you know what's good for you. Boat party, prepare to hoist the ship's boat aboard. The rest of you, to your duties at once, if you don't want to be keelhauled."
