Gregor burst into a resounding laughter that was almost delightful to the
ears. He looked Fred square in the eye before responding, “That, my dear
sir, is a load of poppycock. But allow me to introduce myself, I am Gregor
the Great! Those caves are indeed my home, but the dragon, at least as you
know her, is hardly my
ally. We have a...truce...” Fred noticed the princess rolling her eyes at his mention of being ‘the Great’. “Was that talking raven your familiar? And where are my men?” he asked again. “Raven? You must mean Belboz! You saw Belboz? Dammit! We must be on guard now! What did he say to you?”“WHAT HAPPENED TO MY MEN!!?” Fred erupted with a burst of unbridled anger, his sword now raised. “Easy, sir knight,” cautioned Gregor in a patient voice. “They have probably fled in terror. I know that that may be hard for you to believe, but the necromancer Belboz is well versed in many an arcane art. He most likely put on a grand show, perhaps even shape-shifting into a dragon and unleashing a terror spell upon them. You see, the quote unquote dragon your family and kindred countrymen - yes, I can tell you are a D’Honaire - have been fighting for generations now is actually Belboz. He is also my number one competitor. The REAL dragon is a SHE, quite lazy and simple of mind, and not an all around bad person (for a dragon). She sleeps deep within the caves and has no cause to trouble herself with humans and their goings on. She is not the one who has been molesting Allaria for the past hundred years or so.”“Nonsense!” Fred argued. “My men would never flee! They are men of honor! I have been with them through countless trials and tribulations! And how could they have packed up so quickly and left without a trace!?” “All valid points,” Gregor conceded. “And I do not blame you for your mistrust. However, I must insist you use your own gut instinct on this one. Yaivaine? Some help?”“He’s right,” the princess begrudgingly agreed. “Gregor isn’t a bad man. He’s just obsessive and...well...my offer still stands, Frederigo. We can leave this place and you can take my hand in marriage and we can both be happy far away from this horrible, festering, dirty backwater.” Fred visibly relaxed, and even sheathed his sword. “I still don’t understand how they could have left so quickly, and without a trace,” he stubbornly insisted.Gregor nodded. “No doubt the work of Belboz. I haven’t seen him in some time, so the fact that you just encountered him chills me to the core of my being. He's probably listening in on us right now. Please follow me to a safer place. We are exposed here. I will answer any other questions you have to the best of my ability when we are in a safer location.” “We’re over, Gregor!” came the princess’s catty interruption. “We have no need to follow you! Do we, Frederigo? We’re going back to civilization!”Fred pondered.
