CHAPTER TWO: CHAOS FOCAL POINTS, AN HONEST PERSPECTIVE

What is a Chaos Focal Point?

You and Josh are, now. Sorry about that. Your insertion into the Tower as permanent residents has made you chaos focal points for an indefinite period of time. This is because the Staircase room is a Chaos Nexus of the highest order. It is on par with the Interdimensional Highway (Horsehockey, the Wide Variance of the Tower).

Yes, but what does that mean?

What it basically means is that strange things are going to happen to and around you. A 'normal' life is quite impossible in the long term for you. This is very hard to explain, but if you are talking to Jerry Seinfeld and all of a sudden you are being attacked by the X-Men while Josh does the Macarena with Bea Arthur, it is because you are a Chaos Focal Point.

As pertaining to immortality

Being a Chaos Focal Point has its benefits, of course. If you die, you will inevitably return to the staircase room. It may hurt like the dickens, but you will return. You can (and will) be blown up, stabbed, shot, crushed, burned, etc etc etc. In every case, you will end up back in the staircase room. Not always right away, but still.

Are we linked together?

Yes, and no. yes, eventually you will always end up in the staircase room together but you are independent Chaos Focal Points. You can and do go your separate ways from time to time, and there be long stretches of time where you do not even see each other.

Give me the bad news

This is where the 'honest' part comes in. You will find yourself doing things that you may not want to do. You may suddenly come to your senses covered in peanut butter taunting wild elephants while yodeling the Canadian national anthem. This is just an example. You are not fully in control of your own destiny.

The aforementioned Authors, and many more, have a great measure of control over your actions. The mechanism for this cannot be explained as the fourth wall would implode and destroy us all. Suffice it to say that they will make your decisions for you sometimes, and they generally take you in a direction that provides them the most amusement.

That being said, it is not a bad life, not really. You are both basically immortal, with an effectively infinite world of tower realities to explore. More on that in the next chapter.
