Susan knows how stories go, and she is relatively quick to grudgingly realize that she is being punished for her desire for revenge. It seems her only narrative hope to get out of this - in the absence of any practical hope - is to take responsibility for this mess, care for the girl, and keep her eyes peeled for her second chance.

  1. is a perfect angel, and Susan is alarmed by how rewarding and joyful it is to care for her.
  2. is a rather ordinary girl, and caring for her has its ups and downs. As the months pass, Susan tensely takes full responsibility for the household and waits for a sign, but she knows she may well be in this for the long haul.
  3. is a nightmare of a child, breaking things and treating other children and animals with tremendous cruelty. Susan is quickly at her wit's end.
