Heading toward the right, Fred quickly finds himself leaving the maze of
cubes and entering a wondrous sort of anteroom, the front walls of which
appear to be nearly transparent. The sunlight which pours in through
these obviously magic walls nearly blinds him after the relative darkness
of the cube maze, causing Fred to stagger to a momentary
halt. Suddenly, Fred is startled by a lilting female voice from behind him. "Good afternoon, Sir. Can I help you?" Fred spins around and, through the spots which are now dancing before his eyes, he sees another woman, this one with flaming red hair and a strange, spidery device fitted over her ears and reaching around to her mouth. "Gah," says Fred. "Please hold," says the woman, and then proceeds to stand. "Are you okay, Fred? What's going on?" This is too much for Fred, and so he turns and runs toward the sunlight. Not quite ready for it, he bounces hard against an almost invisible door, but then manages to push through it and dashes out into the open air. Before he has a chance to celebrate his freedom, however, Fred is assaulted by a medium-sized dragon, shiny and smooth and metallic, its eyes semi-transparent orbs without pupils, and its mouth resembling a silvery grating. The creature roars at him in a strange honking bellow, an almost melodious bray that makes his head throb with the sheer volume of it. Completely disoriented now, his heart threatening to pound its way through his chest, Fred picks a direction at random and runs from the foul beast. As he runs, he is praying to all the gods he left behind that they might deliver him from this frightening and evil land. He soon discovers, however, that they have apparently deserted him as he now finds himself not in a place of safety, not back home with his beloved Gwendolyn, but standing instead in the middle of an entire field of metallic dragons; hundreds upon hundreds of them, standing shoulder to shoulder, ready, he is certain, to roast and eat him whole. This last turn of events is too much for Fred, and he begins to swoon. He feels his hammering heartbeat take on a new, erratic rhythm, his eyelids begin to flutter, and the world begin to fade into cottony whiteness. Oddly, just before it does, Fred catches a whiff of a familiar smell. Chocolate. Everything smells of chocolate. And, with that last, strange thought bouncing around his head looking for a coherent thought with which to connect, the world fades away and all is gone.
