Discovering the index was a step forward, but it fell short of what Checkers had been hoping for, which was something that would tell her precisely what magic would be invoked by reciting a particular item. The closest that she had come was her idea that reciting "The Wide Sea" might be intended to scare gliders. That would tie in with the relevant section heading, "Control of Local Glideri".

She put those thoughts to one side for the time being, and concentrated on answering the archivist's question. "This section deals with prophecies of the future."

"Those are the best sort of prophecy," the archivist said drily. Checkers smiled. He went on: "We know that this compilation must be very old, even though we can't put a precise date on it. I wonder whether any of the prophecies have by now been proved correct or incorrect?"

"There are four prophecies altogether...

  1. "Some have been proved correct."
  2. "Some have been proved incorrect."
  3. "But all seem to be dealing with events which would still be in the future."
  4. "Unfortunately they are too obscure for me to tell whether any have yet been shown to be right or wrong."
  5. "One foretells that a gilder will kill a dragon! Had Minestus been able to read Old High Dolomite, I imagine that things would have turned out differently."
