The Smugglers

Fred sees a bunch of tracks leading off down one of the corridors. He
doesn't know what he plans to accomplish by following the smugglers, but
greed and the lust for gold are all he can think about right now. After following the tracks for what seemed like days, the cave opens up into a huge underground lake. There is an opening to daylight at the far side of the lake. Fred looks around for any sign of the smugglers, but he doesn't see anything. After further investigating, it seems like the smugglers had a boat they used to load and unload cargo. They are long gone from here. Fred curses at himself for all the time he has wasted searching for the smugglers and their gold and wonders what came over him. He then touches his dagger again and thoughts of riches and wealth flood into his mind. He jumps into the lake determined to swim after the smugglers. He stops once the water reaches his waist. "What am I doing?" He asks himself. He grabs the dagger from his belt and looks at it. "All the wealth in the world can be yours if you follow what I say." It was the dagger communicating with him. What does Fred do?
