Back at the Chest

Fred just can't stop thinking about what might have been in the chest he
left behind. He cleans off his new dagger and slides it between his pants
and his belt. The dagger hardly weighs anything and he has to keep
touching it to make sure it is still there. Fred turns from the corpse of the now ugly woman and goes back down the trail towards the chest. When he gets to the location, he sees that the chest is gone! The smugglers must have come back and taken it while he was distracted. What does Fred do now?
