"You really should have let go when you were told," a soft,
smooth-sounding voice said. Fred looked around, but could see no-one. The
voice
went on: "We only wanted the book, but it could only be transported if
one of our people was holding it at the time. Unfortunately for you, you
were holding him, so you were brought along as well. But now that
we have you, I'm sure that we can find some use for you. It would all
have been much simpler if we could have taken the book before you reached
the inn, but the necessary preparations took a little time to arrange."
"Who are you?" Fred asked, trying to gather his wits. There was still a dull ache in his arms, a legacy from the pain he had felt, to tell him that this was not just some strange dream. "We call ourselves the Outliers, but that will not mean anything to you." "No, it doesn't. Do you have the princess as well?"
