"Rutland says that he might be able to help us if we are willing to cut a deal with him," Frank Maia said. "He said that he wanted to speak to the Governor's doctor, so I assume that what he wants to talk about must be related to the Governor's memory loss. He was trying not to show it, but I received the strong impression that he's scared of something - or someone. Perhaps the deal that he's hoping to negotiate with us would involve the provision of protection."

Remembering her experiences of the previous evening, Astra made an intuitive leap. She wondered whether she should keep her insight to herself, but decided that the risk of speaking out was worth it. Her intuition did not often let her down, and this could help her to re-establish her authority. "He's frightened of the lord," she said.

"Who?" Belinda said.

  1. "That's our nickname for the man who is the prime mover of the Dragon Group," Frank Maia said. "He has a very aristocratic bearing, hence the nickname. He's utterly ruthless, and it could certainly be him that Rutland is frightened of."
  2. But Frank Maia and the doctor had no more idea than Belinda did concerning who Astra might be referring to. It seemed that her gamble had failed, and that she had merely provided more evidence that she was delusional.
