The peace of the picnic was broken by a scream that came from the direction of the stream running by the side of the pool.

Our hero(ine) and Charlie both leaped up and started to rush across in the direction of the cry.

Just at that point . . .

1. Charlie told Susan to wait there while he investigated
2. Susan told Charlie to wait there while she investigated
3. A woman came running towards them from the stream
