Picnic in the sunshine

It was a short walk to the field that lay by a stream to the south of the village. Soon they were sat down, bathed in warm sunshine, enjoying the delights of the fine picnic that Susan had prepared for them.

Despite being sat there in her pretty dress our hero(ine) was feeling very happy as she and Charlie chatted excitedly. In a funny way this felt like a very natural situation, which wasn't something (s)he had felt for a while. They were just being ordinary people doing a very ordinary thing, so in a strange way it was more normal than the life Sir Fred had been living.

Just then . . .

1. they heard a cry from the direction of the stream
2. they heard the thunder of hooves approaching
3. a cow wandered over to them
