Andrea's main duty is to be ship's cook. Though she has never previously
done so much as boil an egg, she soon learns what ir required. This is
mainly to keep a pot of salt-beef stew simmering at all times, to select
the less weevil-infested biscuits from the barrel, and to dish out the
grog.
As the weeks pass, she gradually becomes resigned to her fate. She learns how to sleep in a hammock slung in a corner of the galley. There are no facilities on board for washing or laundry. Her once fine clothes gradually degenerate into filthy rags (the pirates' own clothes are made of much harder-wearing cloth). Her impractical shoes disintegrate and she goes barefoot. Her once pale skin is burnt a dark brown by the sun, which at least diguises how dirt-encrusted she must be by now. Her hair has grown out into a tangled mane that falls halfway down her back. Eventually, when the ship's hold is full of plundered treasure and the supply of beef, biscuits and grog are running low, the captain decides that it's time to head for the vessel's home port. Besides, the crew are due for some r'n'r.
