Fred knew that, even though Belboz was dead, there were probably other
dangerous entities still lurking in the cave system. He had not forgotten
his and Checkers' unpleasant experience with the wallhugger. For one
thing there was still some residual pain from his ankle to remind him. So
he drew his sword and readied himself.
Astra had heard the clattering too, and she moved to stand beside him. She had found a wicked-looking knife with a foot-long blade with which to arm herself. Fred preferred not to speculate about what Belboz might have used it for. "If only I knew how to turn myself back into a dragon, then we needn't fear whatever might be approaching," she said wistfully. "We needn't fear it anyway," Fred said. Not that he wholly believed that, but he did not wish to encourage Astra in her desire to transform back. "Whatever it is, it's apparently not bothered about stealth," Astra observed. "It must be making a devil of a racket, to have been audible for so long without coming into view."
