The First Option

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 83833

Fred was back in New York, bleeding to death from hundreds of pigeon- bites. Suddenly, there was a great, blinding, white flash.

And Fred stood, fully healthy, in the middle of an empty grey room. There were no doors, no windows, nothing at all except for himself.

"There was never really another option, was there?"

Fred looked around, trying to find the person who had uttered those words. But the room was empty. "Hello?" he called.

"Fred, you've come a far way. Much farther than you know. You may not know it, but your journey has taken almost ten years. And now, it will continue. Oh, you might be lying down, bleeding to death. But you will find some way to survive, some way to continue your Quest. Do you remember the Quest?"

"I..." Fred paused. Suddenly, he realised how far from his original mission he had come. "My quest is over. I slew the dragon, but..."

"But your journey didn't end, did it?"

"No. There was always more. There were shoggoths, and clowns, and caverns, and cities, and dreams, and..."

"Your journey will continue, maybe forever. Maybe it is Never-Ending, this Quest of yours. But no matter where it will take you, you will never realise the most important thing. At least, not unless I tell you."

"So tell me, then."

"Very well, I will. You may not know it, but you have always had choices, options, if you will. Sometimes they were obvious, like when you stood before two entrances to a cave, deciding which one you would walk through. But sometimes, they were less obvious, and you could only choose them if fate allowed you to. But even now, as you stand here, you have never really chosen. Or rather, you have always chosen the first option. Sometimes it was the most obvious one. Fight instead of fleeing, the road with dragon's footprints, love instead of hate."

"Hm. Now that you mention it, I haven't actually gotten a lot of lo..."

"That is not important" the voice said quickly before Fred could finish. It was almost as if it was embarrased about something. "What is important is that with all the choices you've had, with all the options, you have always chosen Option Number One."

Suddenly, Fred saw two doors appear.

"I shall give you the choice once more. Here are two doors, Door One, and Door Two. Whichever door you chose will lead you to some situation I cannot foresee. When you walk through the door, you will forget this conversation, and go boldly onwards to whatever fate you'll have. Which door, which option, do you choose?"

  1. Fred chooses Door One. It's the only option there is.
  2. Fred chooses Door Two.
  3. "No, there must be some other option. There must be something... Something Else!"
