The Shape in the Ice

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 83828

A chill swept over Fred as he stared at the shape in the ice, a chill that had nothing to do with how cold the cavern was. The shape in the ice looked like a man, but Fred knew that appearances could be deceiving. The man wore a blue coverall, worn and darkly stained. His hands were terribly scarred, as if they had been in a fire. And his face... his face was hidden beneath a mask.

The mask was deathly white and covered his whole head. It was unlike any mask Fred had ever seen before. Fred was used to the masks of masquerade revelers; masks in the shapes of birds or cats or wild animals, masks that glittered with precious stones or were painted with fantastic and arabesque designs. But this mask wasn't like that at all. This mask wasn't meant to cover up the face, it was the face. There was no detail in the face though. It was more like just the outline of one. Just like the man himself, in his nondescript workmen's apparel. He wasn't actually a man at all, he just wore the shape of one.

For a moment Fred thought of pulling off that white mask to see the face that lay beneath. But once again Fred felt a chill crawl over his bones. The idea of touching that face... He no longer wanted to be anywhere near the shape in the ice. It was best to leave it be, dead and frozen in this glacial hole.

Gazing about the cavern he spied a passage out just beyond the glacier. Fred began to walk toward it. He had a quest to finish and a dragon to kill.
