The Expected Symptoms

"Interesting. Have you had any vision problems?" Stacy blinked her eyes, looking around carefully. She could see just fine. "Uh, no," she said.

The alien looked thoughtful. "Nausea? Skin lesions? Swelling of the joints?"

Stacy fought hard to keep herself from trembling. "Were... Were you expecting that stuff to happen?"

The alien made an odd sort of shrugging gesture. "It was a possibility. But you say the only effect was on your memory?"

"That's right," interjected Robert, "and all we want to know is, can you fix it?"

The alien looked even more thoughtful.

1. "I will need to consult with a specialist."
2. "The human brain is a complex organ. Any meddling we do with it might well make things worse."
3. "I think it may be possible."
4. "Yes. But what do you offer us in return?"
