The Chilean famine thankfully had not affected the entire country, just a section of the northernmost portion of it, with the city of Arica as ground zero. Things had gotten bad enough that shortages of food were being reported in border towns in both Peru and Bolivia. Politicians down in Santiago wrestled with the problem before they opted for the easiest solution: begging the United States for help. The National Guard aircraft carrying Josh was supposed to land at Chacalluta International Airport, eleven and a half miles north of Arica. From there, the passengers would get situated, meet the convoy of trucks carrying food and water, and start driving them down Chile Route 5 into the city, where they would make fifteen different stops in key areas of Arica, handing out the supplies to those in need. But somehow, nothing went to plan. The plane touched down in central Chile to refuel, and nobody seemed to notice that they weren't anywhere near Arica. The plane, filled with jet fuel, returned to the skies and started to veer southeast, finally touching down in the small town of Puerto Williams, the southernmost city in Chile, and arguably, the southernmost settlement of any significant population in the world.
For a comparison: Josh and his fellow National Guardsmen are now physically closer to Antarctica then they are to their original scheduled destination of Arica, hundreds of miles to the north. And somehow, no one in charge of the mission is the least bit aware that they have all flown horribly off course...that is, not until the mission captain approaches the airport's hangars, and doesn't see any kind of truck loaded with food supplies. What happens next?
