Matthias proved a surprisingly good swordsman, keeping Fred at bay for
the time being, and Adele and Elaine were well-matched. That left Belboz
to deal with Sigin and Astra as his immediate adversaries. Naturally he
saw the tiger as his more dangerous opponent. He cast a quick spell, and
Sigin instantly shrank to the size of a domestic cat. He just had time to
cast another spell against Astra as she rushed him. She hesitated, a
stunned expression on her face, as she realised that she no longer had
any arms.
There were no wounds, just smooth skin where her arms should have emerged
from her shoulders.
Exotica let out a piercing shriek when she saw what Belboz had done. That distracted him for a moment and he may also have assumed that Astra was no longer a threat. But her fighter's instinct prompted her to launch an athletic and devastating kick. It connected with the necromancer's jaw and he fell unconscious. Seeing what had happened to her father, Adele lost her concentration, and was promptly hit by a sleep spell from Elaine. As she crumpled to the floor of the cave, Matthias cried "Adele!" and dropped his guard. Fred could have run him through, but reluctant to kill the lad he contented himself by sending his sword flying from his hand. "Adele will be fine," Elaine told Matthias. "She's just asleep. Now I must remove Belboz's ring from his finger before he comes round. That's the source of most of his power."
