"Er, I'm sure that won't be necessary," said Stacy, trying to keep any
hint of the
alarm that she felt out of her voice. "Scientists do fall out from time to
time, you
know. You should see some of the flaming that goes on in the letters'
pages of even
the most respectable scientific journals. I'm sure we'll soon patch things
up."
"As you wish, Dr Jones. I must go now. Good evening to you." And with that
he left.
Stacy waited ten minutes in case Zimmermann was hanging around in the corridor, and then went back to her room. Opening her door, she found that someone had pushed a sheet of paper under it. The brief message wasn't signed, but from its contents appeared to be from Wu. As she read it, Stacy realised that she didn't know what Wu's handwriting looked like. Supposing it had actually been written by Zimmermann? It said:
