Astra was naturally rather nervous about undergoing a "Julian Section",
as the doctors called it. None of them had ever actually performed the
operation - a trading fleet offered few opportunities for gynaecology.
However they seemed confident, so she gave them the go-ahead.
Luckily the doctors had available a very powerful sleeping draught, which they assured Astra would keep her unconscious throughout the whole procedure. She hoped that they were right, having been told what the operation would involve. Sure enough, on being given the draught she was deeply asleep within minutes. When she woke up, some hours later, she was naturally very dozy at first. It therefore took her a little while to realise that - as she lay on her back in bed - the massive swell of her belly still filled much of her field of view, and even longer to recall that it was no longer supposed to be like that. "Doc!" she called. "Ah, you're awake." She turned her head and saw that one of her doctors was sitting beside her bed. "Why didn't you do the Julian Section?" "Believe me, we tried, but that's one powerful spell that you have affecting you. Every time that we brought a scalpel - or saw, or any other implement - anywhere close to your belly it simply vanished into nothingness. I'm afraid that you're going to have to wait until the fleet puts into port somewhere where there's a magician powerful enough to reverse the spell. Assuming that a magician capable of doing that exists."
