The beasts were ferocious, but luckily they did not seem to be very intelligent fighters. Unlike true hounds, they came at him one at a time rather than all of them rushing him at once. Thus Lord Fred was able to kill or disable a fair number without being overwhelmed. While he fought he was steadily falling back towards the cave.

At last he was close enough to make a dash for it. Luckily he had put enough fear into the surviving creatures that they hung back for a moment, and he made it safely.

  1. The surviving dragonhounds try to follow him in, but their size means that they can only enter one at a time.
  2. The beasts remain outside, for some reason unwilling to enter. But they show no sign of leaving and others join them, making escape that way impossible.
