The Panic Room

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 81514

Mindy and Astra had picked their way through the wreckage of the headquarters and were now safely lodged in the 'Panic Room'. It had fifty bunk beds surrounding a sunken area one hundred feet wide. The walls of the middle section held a bewildering array of supplies and equipment.
The floors, dark grey, had chairs and consoles with strange blinking lights and windows that looked into nothing. There were martial arts practice dummies, a few swords left on document-filled desks, a trapdoor that refused to open and, slightly off center from the exact middle of the room, a black tower that went from the floor to the ceiling fifty feet up.
The first thing Astra had done was treat Mindy medically. The princess had not been sure how she was going to do so. Mindy, shakily, showed how a special clean blade, set into the recessed lock system, allowed access to the panic room. The logic was that in an emergency, any female, needing to enter would be willing to have a finger cut.
Astra, of course, had done so as Mindy wasn't looking so hot.
Once inside, special lights had drawn Astra's attention to a medical supply locker under one of the beds. Mindy was now sleeping on the bed, both hands bandaged tight, dozing under the influence of the Triassic leaf, an Allarian drug for pain. With what supplies Astra had been able to use (much of the items in the locker were incomphrensible) she had determined Mindy's bad wrist had been rebroken and the other was badly sprained. Mindy had gone into shock while in the cart, but Astra knew how to treat that even without a strange technological wonderland of fear and despair.
The Princess sat on the bed above Mindy and pondered the Safe Room. Why hadn't whomever destroyed the outside come here? Why hadn't any one of the women who'd been outside come here?
Mindy hadn't been making much sense as they entered. But the lock...being willing to be cut would indicate a great desire to enter the panic room...perhaps some sort of technology analyzed the blood to discover Astra was female? This would make sense as it was a women's shelter. Locking out men would make sure no abusive husband could enter and hurt a panicking wife. And those who had tried to arrest the naked women were mostly male...though it was hard to figure out under the law enforcement uniforms.
On the other hand, an abusive husband could force a woman to have herself cut. There must be far, far more to this technology then she had thought. So many security holes...Astra would not be able to relax for some time. Especially with the question as to why no other women were in the room. Had the authorities gone far past their hatred of loose morals and had actually taken hostages?
Astra slides off the bed and checks on Mindy. She is doing much better. Thank diety her country taught first aide to all women (and men) in schools as a matter of course.
Astra slowly went around the room, examining every bed and locker on the outside for any supplies or knowledge. The inside would be next. It took only ten beds before she found something...

  1. An envelope on a pillow.
  2. A sword hanging on the wall under a top-bed.
  3. A younger woman hiding in a supply closet between two bunk beds. She was healthy.
  4. Mindy's medical records. Okay, this was so fortunate as to make her wary.
  5. From this angle...
