There wasn't much else to do on the island in the way of entertainment so, in spite of Astra's initial reaction, it wasn't long before she and Velus were lovers. (Alfred, being 89, wasn't really an option.) Almost at once Velus managed what Fred had failed to do in a year, and had made Astra pregnant.

Six months later: "You're starting to get quite fat," Velus said, rather ungallantly.

"I know," Astra said. "I can't understand it." Alfred smiled and said nothing.
