It said a lot for Astra's authority over her people that her announcement
that she was abdicating in my favour had been accepted without any
significant dissent while I was away, even though I was a total stranger
to everyone but herself. She had thought it unwise to tell anyone my true
identity, a decision with which I agreed. The time was not yet ripe to
reveal that I was a dragon; knowing that might have strained the people's
loyalty beyond the breaking point.
When I told Astra about my plan to attack the Dragon Lands she was delighted, seeing it as a great opportunity for adventure. She insisted on being the second in command of my armies, something which I was happy to agree to. After all, she had managed to make herself ruler of the continent over the last fifty years, and thus had surely proved herself to be a great general. One major disadvantage that humans have compared with dragons is, of course, an inability to fly. So the beginning of our campaign had to wait while a large armada was constructed to carry our forces across the ocean.
